Meet April Mellion, a one-year member who shares why she joined Black Benefactors and how she’s honoring her husband’s legacy through giving.
“My husband Roy and I dreamed of starting a nonprofit to simply help wherever the need existed in Washington, DC. After realizing that there were thousands of organizations doing the work, we decided to help them prosper rather than compete. Preparing to donate to a community foundation, we discovered, investigated, and joined Black Benefactors.
In August of 2019, Roy died from Glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer. September 15th would have been Roy’s 50th birthday. To celebrate and honor Roy, I am inviting friends to give to Black Benefactors from August 15th to September 15th.
Roy’s motto, we who are strong ought to bear with the failings of the weak and not please ourselves, Romans 15:1.”
